This is where I started as an professional photographer. It’s a great place to hone technique and experiment with style, because the shooting space and light is entirely controlled by me, as photographer. I love the unmistakably beauty that natural light can give, but quite often with portraiture you just need to be able to produce the results, be it for a business website “about us” page, social media maybe just a LinkedIn profile.
Whichever style is for you, I’d be surprised if you can tell here which ones were shot in a large studio, which were shot in the client’s home, and which were shot in my mini home studio in Haywards Heath.
To my mind portraits can be segmented in two ways:
Professional Portraits
Clean, deliberate, well frame, accurately focussed, well lit images of the subject. The kind of thing you just need from time to time be it for a LinkedIn Profile, an actor’s headshot, or any of the other myriad of user cases where a selfie simply isn’t right.
Creative Portraits
More experimental, more about the art, likely to involve less straightforward lighting. It’s more of a liaison between photographer and subject, to try to create something visually interesting and unique.
